Green on a 46mm dial is a lot of green, and that is the point of the IW501015. The Big Pilot’s dial is the largest uninterrupted surface IWC produces, so a sunburst finish has somewhere to actually work — the grain radiates out from the centre and the colour travels from dark forest at the edges to bright olive under the hands as the wrist turns. On a smaller watch the effect is a detail. Here it is the whole watch.
The Big Pilot descends from the B-Uhr observation watches of the 1940s — 55mm instruments strapped over a flight jacket, built so a navigator could read them at arm’s length in a vibrating aircraft. Everything about the modern 46mm case is a scaled-down version of that: the oversized numerals, the triangle at twelve, the conical crown sized for gloved hands. The green dial is the one concession to the present, and it sits on top of an otherwise unchanged instrument.
Two things are difficult on this reference and neither is the case. The sunburst has to radiate evenly from the centre across 46mm of dial — any unevenness in the brushing shows as a patch that stays dark while the rest of the dial lights up. And the green has to sit between yellow and blue, because a green that drifts either way stops reading as the Big Pilot green and starts reading as a generic coloured dial. ZF Factory leads the Big Pilot line in our rankings and handles both, along with the crown machining and a power reserve hand that actually tracks. On a dial this size a super clone Big Pilot is judged almost entirely on how evenly that finish runs. Our Big Pilot guide covers the 46mm references and the conical crown.
60 metres, which covers swimming and incidental water. The Big Pilot was never built as a water watch — the rating is there for practicality rather than capability, and the conical crown screws down to maintain it.
Within the Big Pilot range the green IW501015 is the contemporary choice against black, which is the default, and blue, which belongs to the Le Petit Prince editions. For the same size in a material that changes with wear, the bronze Heritage IW501005 runs the identical movement and seven-day reserve in a bronze case. The black-dial IW501001 is the straightforward version of the same watch.
It travels. The grain radiates from the centre, so the colour reads dark forest near the edges and brightens to olive where light strikes directly, shifting as the wrist moves. On a 46mm dial the effect is far more visible than on a smaller watch.
On a correct build, yes — the hand tracks down as the reserve depletes and resets on winding. A static or painted indicator is a common shortcut and gives the build away immediately.
ZF Factory, ranked first for the Big Pilot line. Even sunburst brushing across 46mm and a green held between yellow and blue are the two things that decide this reference.
It is deliberately oversized — the proportions come from cockpit instruments, not wrist comfort. Wrists from around 7 inches carry it well. Below that, the 43mm Big Pilot delivers the same design in a case that fits.
