Platinum is the quietest way to make an expensive watch. It does not announce itself the way gold does — the colour is close to steel, slightly whiter and deeper, and the only immediate tell is the weight, which is roughly twice what titanium would give you at the same size. The IW329501 puts that metal around a 43mm Big Pilot case and then cuts an aperture at six for a flying tourbillon, against a midnight blue dial that belongs to IWC’s Le Petit Prince series. One hundred and fifty pieces were made.
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry flew mail routes across the Sahara and the Andes before he wrote Le Petit Prince in 1943, and the book carries the night flying in it. IWC has run editions in his name since 2013, always in blue. On this reference the midnight blue is the ground against which the tourbillon turns, and the pairing is deliberate: the complication that corrects for gravity, set against the colour of the sky he worked in. The platinum case is the series at its most serious.
A tourbillon is the one complication that cannot be faked visually, because it is visible and it moves. The cage has to complete a revolution in sixty seconds — not fifty, not seventy — and it has to do it smoothly, because any stutter in the rotation is obvious through an open aperture. Most factories do not attempt it. ZF Factory leads the Big Pilot line and builds this reference with a functioning cage at the correct rate, and holds the midnight blue at the depth the series requires: light enough to still read as blue in shade, dark enough to carry night. That combination — a cage turning true and a blue that stays blue — is what separates a super clone Big Pilot tourbillon from a watch with a spinning decoration behind a window. Our Big Pilot guide covers the 43mm generation in detail.
100 metres on the genuine reference, which is more than a tourbillon of this class usually offers. In practice the complication rather than the seal sets the limit — hard impact matters more to a tourbillon cage than water does, so treat it as a watch to keep dry regardless of the rating.
Within the Pilots collection this is the apex reference, and the comparison worth making is with the Armor Gold IW329502, which carries the same complication and dial in IWC’s hardened gold alloy and ran to 300 pieces. Platinum is the colder, heavier and rarer of the two. For the midnight blue aesthetic without the complication, the time-only Le Petit Prince references cover the same ground at a different level.
A tourbillon supported from one side only, with no upper bridge across it. That leaves the rotating cage fully visible through the dial aperture. The cage carries the escapement and turns once per minute, averaging out the effect of gravity on timekeeping across positions.
One hundred and fifty pieces in platinum. The companion reference IW329502 in 18-carat Armor Gold ran to 300. Both carry the same flying tourbillon and midnight blue Le Petit Prince dial.
ZF Factory. Few factories attempt a tourbillon at all because the cage is visible and has to turn at exactly sixty seconds per revolution. ZF leads the Big Pilot line and builds this one with a working cage at the correct rate.
Automatic. The genuine Cal. 82905 uses IWC’s Pellaton winding system and delivers 80 hours. It is not a hand-wound calibre, despite how often tourbillons are assumed to be.
