Armor Gold is IWC’s own alloy, 18 carat and heat-treated to a harder structure than standard gold, which matters on a watch meant to be worn rather than stored. On the IW329502 it wraps a 43mm Big Pilot case around a midnight blue sunray dial with a flying tourbillon turning in an aperture at six. Three hundred pieces were made. It is the warmer counterpart to the platinum version of the same watch, and the gold does something the platinum cannot — it lifts the blue instead of cooling it.
The tourbillon was invented for pocket watches, which spend their lives in one orientation where gravity pulls consistently on the balance. A wristwatch moves too much for that logic to hold, so a modern tourbillon is display rather than correction — and IWC treats it that way, cutting an aperture at six so the cage is the thing you look at. Against the midnight blue of the Le Petit Prince dial it reads as the mechanical centre of the watch rather than a hidden refinement.
Two things decide this reference, and neither is the case. The tourbillon cage has to turn once every sixty seconds and turn smoothly, because it is visible and a stutter cannot be hidden. The Armor Gold has to land warm without going brassy — IWC’s alloy sits on the deeper, redder side of 18 carat, and a plating that runs yellow puts the whole relationship with the blue dial out. ZF Factory leads the Big Pilot line and handles both. A superclone Big Pilot tourbillon in Armor Gold has to carry both at once, because a flaw in either is visible from across a table. Our Big Pilot guide covers the 43mm generation in detail.
100 metres on the genuine reference. As with any tourbillon, the practical limit is impact rather than water — the cage is the most delicate assembly in the watch, and a knock matters more to it than a splash does.
IWC’s Saint-Exupéry editions run across the Pilots collection, always in blue, from time-only Big Pilots through to this. The direct comparison is the platinum IW329501, limited to 150 pieces, which carries the identical complication and dial in a colder, heavier metal. Gold or platinum is the only real question between them.
IWC’s proprietary 18-carat gold alloy, heat-treated to a finer grain structure that makes it harder and more wear-resistant than standard 18-carat gold. The colour sits on the warm, red side of the range, closer to 5N than to yellow gold.
Case material and edition size. The IW329502 is 18-carat Armor Gold, limited to 300 pieces; the IW329501 is platinum, limited to 150. Same 43mm case, same flying tourbillon, same midnight blue Le Petit Prince dial.
No. The genuine Cal. 82905 is automatic, using IWC’s Pellaton winding with an 80-hour reserve. Tourbillons are often assumed to be hand-wound, but this one is not.
ZF Factory. A visible cage turning at the wrong rate or with a stutter cannot be hidden, which is why most factories leave tourbillons alone. ZF builds this one functioning at the correct sixty-second rotation.
