A 42 mm steel-cased Planet Ocean 600M GMT, with a date window and a 24-hour hand that circles the dial once a day to carry a second time zone.
That fourth hand is the whole reason this reference exists. It turns from the same centre as the others and completes one rotation per calendar day instead of two, which is what makes it useful rather than decorative. A twelve-hour hand pointed at seven cannot tell you whether the city you left is having breakfast or dinner. A 24-hour hand can, because every hour of the day gets its own position on the dial and no position is used twice.
In practice you set it once and stop thinking about it. Park the 24-hour hand on the zone you need to keep — home, the office you report to, the market that opens while you sleep — and it holds that reference while local time moves underneath it. Once you know where midnight sits, the half of the dial the hand occupies answers the day-or-night question before you have read a numeral, and that is the glance you actually make: not “what time is it there” so much as “can I call”.
It also works as a second opinion on the date. The date window rolls over at local midnight; the 24-hour hand tells you whether the zone you care about has got there yet. For a watch that spends most of its life in one city, that is the function that earns its keep — the client three zones out, the flight that lands on a date the watch has not reached.
Applied numerals are separate metal parts, made individually and then fixed to the dial. Printed numerals are ink laid on the surface. The difference is a few tenths of a millimetre of height, and it changes how the dial behaves in every light you read it in. A raised numeral has a top face, a bevel and a shadow. It takes whatever light the room offers from whatever angle it offers it, and it stays legible when the dial is tilted away from you — in a car, under a cuff, across a desk.
It is also the part of a dial hardest to get wrong quietly. Print goes soft at the edges on a weak replica dial, bleeds into the lacquer, or lands a hair off its index. An applied numeral either sits square and flush or it does not, and you can see which from arm’s length. On a black dial with no second colour to distract you, that is the surface the eye lands on first, which is why a superclone that gets the numerals right reads correct and one that does not never will.
The positions matter as much as the execution. Numerals at 3, 6, 9 and 12 mark the quarters, and the quarters are the points the eye uses to orient before it reads anything at all. You do not count your way around this dial; you register that a hand is past the 9 and work from there. Add a 24-hour hand to that crowd and the quarter markers become the frame you read the second zone against.
Three watches sit on the 217.30 stem and the bezel is the only thing separating them. Reference 217.30.42.21.01.001 is the one with the black ceramic bezel and the steel bracelet: no second colour, no nickname, nothing to explain. It is the baseline the other two are variations of, and the only one of the three that refuses to have an opinion about colour.
That is not a lesser specification, it is a different decision. A black ceramic bezel over a black dial on a steel bracelet has no context it looks wrong in, and a knock on the bezel edge does not leave the bright scar a steel or aluminium insert carries for the rest of its life. Watches worn every day are not chosen for the first week. They are chosen for the two-hundredth.
So the sorting is simple. If you want the colour conversation, the same 42 mm GMT exists with a blue ceramic bezel over the same black dial, and a third build trades the bracelet for rubber and runs orange. If you want one GMT and no decisions attached to it, this is the one.
Living with it comes down to the reserve. A full wind on VSF’s VS8900-family clone gives 48 hours, and worn daily you never set it at all. That is the unglamorous truth about this watch, and it is the same truth that makes the undecorated build the survivor: a black ceramic bezel GMT on a steel bracelet is the one you eventually stop noticing, which is the highest thing anyone can say about a tool. The louder members of the family are in the Omega Seamaster collection.
