Three bezel colours sit on the 217.30 stem of the 42mm Planet Ocean 600M GMT: black, blue and orange. This is the blue one, and it is the only one of the three where the bezel and the dial deliberately disagree. Its siblings both resolve themselves — the black version closes a black bezel over a black dial, and the orange version repeats its bezel colour in the orange Arabic numerals on its own dial. Here, blue ceramic sits over a black dial with nothing blue on it anywhere, and that unresolved pairing is the entire argument for choosing it.

Blue Bezel, Black Dial: The Odd One of the Three

Set the three next to each other and the logic is immediate. The black configuration is a single tone — bezel and dial read as one dark disc, which is exactly why it is the base of the stem and also why it vanishes on the wrist. The orange one answers its own question, bezel colour picked up by the numerals on the dial and carried further by the black rubber strap it comes on. What that refusal produces is separation. Because nothing on the dial echoes the bezel, the bezel stays legible as its own element: you can see where the steel stops and the ceramic begins from several feet away, which is not true of the black version at any distance. It changes what the watch does under a cuff, too. A blue ring over black reads as a deliberate two-colour watch, where the all-black version reads as a tool and the orange reads as a declaration. If you have already ruled out the base black for being too quiet, this is the configuration built for that specific objection.

Against a steel case and a steel bracelet, the blue is the only colour on the whole watch, which concentrates the eye on it in a way the orange version cannot manage — there, the orange has to share attention between bezel and dial.

Reading a Second Time Zone on This One

The applied Arabic numerals at 3, 6, 9 and 12 are what make the GMT indication work on this dial. Four fixed quarter markers split the dial into readable quadrants, so the second-zone hand is judged against a numeral rather than against an unbroken ring of identical batons, and the colour break between bezel and dial keeps the edge of the dial unambiguous. A date window completes the set of indications. The practical result is a watch you read in one glance instead of two.

That rating is worth pausing on. Most watches that track a second time zone are dress-leaning pieces with modest water resistance; this is a genuine dive case that happens to carry a GMT hand, which is why it works as a one-watch answer for someone who swims and travels.

What separates this from the base model is whether you see the bezel at all. The black-bezel 42mm GMT holds bezel and dial in one tone and is the more conventional of the two; on 217.30.42.21.01.002 the ceramic ring is the one element that announces itself. Nothing else in the Seamaster range puts blue ceramic over a black dial on a 42mm case.
