The Performance Chronograph is IWC’s motorsport line, built with AMG and separated from the standard Pilot’s chronograph by a tachymeter bezel and a different set of dial furniture. The IW388309 is that watch in 18-carat rose gold — the only precious metal in the range — with a matte black dial and a black rubber strap closing on a rose gold buckle. Gold on rubber is a deliberate combination: it keeps a 41mm chronograph in solid gold from reading as a dress watch and leaves it something you can actually wear.
IWC brought the Pilot’s chronograph down from 43mm to 41mm for wearers who wanted the architecture without the presence, and nothing was given up in the move — same calibre, same functions, same column-wheel chronograph. The Performance line then added the tachymeter bezel, which is a motorsport instrument rather than an aviation one and the clearest sign that this watch belongs to the AMG side of the collection rather than the cockpit side.
Two surfaces have to be right here and they pull in opposite directions. The rose gold has to land warm without going brassy, and the matte black dial has to stay completely flat — any gloss or texture variation across a black surface shows immediately, and it shows more against gold than it would against steel because the eye is already comparing finishes. APS Factory runs the clone Cal. 69385 across the 41mm chronographs and handles both: flat black with full luminous fill in the numerals, and gold held at the correct temperature. Getting both surfaces right in one watch is what makes this a super clone IWC Performance Chronograph rather than a gold-plated approximation. Where each factory leads on IWC is set out in our factory rankings.
100 metres with a screw-in crown, which is unusually high for a solid gold chronograph — most precious metal watches stop at 30. It is part of why the rubber strap makes sense on this reference rather than leather.
The Performance line runs across three materials. The titanium IW388304 is the lightest and comes on a matching bracelet; the Ceratanium IW388307 is the darkest and the most scratch-resistant; this rose gold version is the outlier, trading the tool-watch logic of the other two for weight and warmth. All three share the 41.1mm case, the tachymeter bezel and the same calibre. The rest of the range sits in the Pilots collection.
18-carat rose gold. It is the only precious metal reference in the Performance Chronograph 41 line — the other variants are grade 5 titanium and Ceratanium. It ships on black rubber with a matching rose gold buckle.
Converting elapsed time into average speed over a known distance. Start the chronograph at a marker, stop it at the next, and the scale reads off speed directly. It comes from motorsport rather than aviation, which is why it appears only on the AMG line.
APS Factory. They hold the clone Cal. 69385 and the two surfaces that decide this reference — flat matte black dial and rose gold at the correct warmth rather than drifting brassy.
Because IWC built it as a motorsport chronograph with 100 metres of water resistance, not a dress piece. Rubber keeps it wearable and keeps the gold from reading as formal.
