The Mark XX is the plainest watch IWC makes and the AMG edition keeps it that way. Grade 5 titanium, sandblasted to a flat matte grey, 40mm across — the smallest case in the Pilot’s range and the easiest to live with. The dial stays black, with the Petronas green of the Mercedes-AMG Formula One team carried only in the numerals, indices and luminous hands. There is no tachymeter, no chronograph and no livery panel. The partnership shows up as a colour on an otherwise unchanged instrument.
IWC has been the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team’s watch partner since 2013, and the editions that come out of it split into two kinds: the loud ones built on the chronograph platform, and the quiet ones built on the Mark. This is the quiet kind. The Mark XX arrived in 2022 as the successor to the Mark XVIII, bringing the in-house Cal. 32111 and a five-day reserve to a line that had run on outsourced movements for years. The AMG edition takes that watch and changes one thing — the colour of the printing.
Petronas green is a specific green, and getting it wrong is the fastest way to spoil this reference. Too yellow and it reads lime; too dark and it disappears against the black dial in anything but direct light. It also has to appear in the luminous material, not just the printing, so the dial glows green rather than the usual white. V6 Factory handles the Mark XX line and holds that colour in both places. The sandblasted titanium is the second half of the build — the blast has to be fine enough to read as a deliberate matte finish rather than a rough surface. Where each factory leads on IWC is set out in our factory rankings.
100 metres with a screwed-in crown, higher than the Mark series carried historically. Combined with titanium and a 40mm case, it makes this the most practical watch in the Pilot’s range for wearing without thinking about it.
The Mark line sits at the entry point of the Pilots collection and is the one most people actually wear daily — 40mm, time and date, nothing else. Standard Mark XX references give the same watch without the partnership colour. Against the Big Pilot and the chronographs, the Mark gives up presence and complication in exchange for being the only IWC pilot watch that disappears under a cuff.
Black, with Petronas green used for the Arabic numerals, indices and luminous hands. The case is sandblasted grade 5 titanium in matte grey. Listings describing a silver dial on this reference have it wrong.
The genuine Cal. 32111 runs 120 hours — five days. The clone movement delivers 40 to 48 hours, which is the honest figure for this build. The display and functions match; the reserve does not.
V6 Factory for the Mark XX line. The build turns on holding Petronas green correctly in both the printing and the luminous material, and on a titanium blast fine enough to read as finish rather than roughness.
Yes. The green is confined to the numerals and hands against a black dial — at arm’s length it reads as a plain pilot watch. Nothing about the case or dial announces the partnership.
