This is the one you take where water, heat and salt are part of the plan. Of the three 42 mm Planet Ocean 600M GMTs built on the 217.30 stem, it is the only configuration that arrives on a black rubber strap instead of a steel bracelet, and that is not a cosmetic footnote — it is the line that tells you where the watch is meant to be. Boat, pool, gym bag, the fortnight when it comes off for nothing. The 600 m rating sets the terms and rubber is the strap that matches them.
Orange runs through the Planet Ocean line rather than appearing on it. It is the first fifteen minutes of the chronograph’s black bezel; it is the GMT arrow and the minute track on the full-ceramic blue diver. On this reference it stops being a highlight and becomes the watch: the entire bezel is orange ceramic, and the Arabic numerals on the black dial are orange too. Two of the three surfaces you look at are the same colour and the third is black. Colour that lives inside the ceramic rather than in a coating laid over it cannot wear off an edge, which is the practical reason a bezel this loud stays sensible to own: the orange in the photograph is the orange it keeps.
It matters for reading, not only for looks. Orange on black is the strongest contrast pairing anywhere in this collection, because the hue separates as hard as the brightness does. The numerals announce themselves before the hands do. On the black and blue builds the markers are part of the dial’s furniture; here they are the first thing the eye resolves, and the bezel tells you where the top of the watch is in the same glance. For a dial whose job is to be read quickly and at an angle, that is the entire argument.
The three 217.30 builds share a case, a depth rating and a movement. What separates them is bezel, dial and strap, in that order of importance.
217.30.42.21.01.001 — bezel: black ceramic. Dial: black, applied Arabic numerals at 3, 6, 9 and 12. Strap: steel bracelet.
217.30.42.21.01.002 — bezel: blue ceramic. Dial: black, applied Arabic numerals at 3, 6, 9 and 12. Strap: steel bracelet.
217.30.42.21.01.003 — bezel: orange ceramic. Dial: black, orange Arabic numerals. Strap: black rubber.
Shared by all three: a 42 mm steel case, 600 m, and the genuine Omega Cal. 8906 GMT, reproduced here by the VS8900-family clone movement from VSF with a 48-hour reserve.
This one commits. An orange ceramic bezel and orange numerals decide what else the watch can be worn with, and nothing else in the line gets near it. The blue is the middle position, a colour you notice without it settling anything else you are wearing. The quiet end of the stem is the black-bezel build on the steel bracelet: nothing to coordinate, nothing to tire of, the one to take if it is the only Omega in the drawer.
A steel bracelet has to be fitted. Links come out, you end up between two holes, and in heat it either grips or slides. Rubber skips all of that. It buckles where you want it, it does not pack salt and grit into a hundred moving joints, it rinses under a tap and dries, and it does not carry the temperature of the room into your wrist. Anyone who has worn steel on a boat in August, or swum in it and then spent the afternoon with warm water sitting in the clasp, already knows which of the two they would rather have on.
Weight is the other half. The same 42 mm case rides lighter on rubber and stays where you put it, and a strap that does not move is a strap you stop feeling — which, on a watch whose job is to be worn in and out of water for two weeks straight, is most of the point. There is nothing to resize and nothing that looks worse for having been used.
The cosmetic dividend comes the right way round. Black rubber is the quiet part of this watch. Put an orange ceramic bezel and orange numerals on a steel bracelet and two things compete for attention; on black rubber the bezel carries the watch alone and the strap does nothing but hold it on. That is why this superclone ships the way it does. The black and blue 217.30 GMTs, the 600 m chronographs and the Diver 300M references sit alongside it in the Omega Seamaster collection.
